Introduction to Marshals

Marshals are the unsung heroes of medieval combat sports, embodying discipline, fairness, and safety.

These officials ensure that every bout adheres to historical accuracy and competition rules, preserving the sport's integrity while safeguarding participants.

Whether you're a newcomer or considering this vital role, becoming a Marshal offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the medieval combat community.

What Do Marshals Do?

Marshals are responsible for ensuring the seamless execution of tournaments, from preparation to post-fight analysis. Their duties are divided into various roles:

Knight Marshal:

  • Oversees the entire tournament as the chief official.

  • Makes final decisions in disputes.

  • Supervises all Marshals and participants during the event.

Field Marshals:

  • Operate within the combat zone, breaking up clinches and maintaining fighter safety during bouts.

Line Marshals:

  • Positioned outside the combat list, they observe fights, note rule violations, and report findings to the Knight Marshal.

Support Marshals:

  • Includes video supervisors, timekeepers, and authenticity representatives who handle technical aspects such as scoring, time management, and historical accuracy.
